Rome is one of the oldest and most visited cities in Europe. Each year, more than four million tourists come to see the Eternal City, making it the third most popular Metropolis in Europe, after Paris and London. Like most of the top tourist cities, Rome has experienced a decline in arrivals in the wake of the economic recession.

Because the city relies on money from visitors, most businesses have had to lower their prices. This includes restaurants, retail stores, and hotels. Since 2007, occupancy rates in Roman hotels have fallen by about ten percent, which is greater than the decline in arrivals. Rule number one here has to be to shop around considerably when you are contemplating a trip. It is not usually a good idea to focus on just one destination and then accept the lowest price that you can find. Instead, try compiling a list of around 20 plus destinations that you would love to venture to and keep your eyes peeled for all of them.

Then you need to weigh up a few other factors: First, look into the best exchange rates today and try to ascertain which destination is going to provide you with the best value for money. This would obviously mean that it will cost you less for the accommodation, once you get there and you will also save a lot of money on your food expenses.

Next you need to price up the cost of flying to said destination. Obviously, the best deals will be when you book in advance, but not too far beforehand. It is a fallacy that you get the best deals if you book more than 6 months beforehand - you won't! New York is far from being the cheapest city in the world to travel to. In fact, I have often seen prices that are approaching one thousand pounds, per person, for a flight and around four nights hotel accommodation. This is atrocious and no matter how much you would like to travel to New York, never be this gullible.

I have been lucky enough to travel to the Big Apple three times and every time I have booked the aspects of the trip separately. I always found that tour operators worked out considerably more expensive and there is no such thing as a cheap package deal.

Manhattan, New York Hotels are still possible, to keep you within an affordable budget, but steer clear of Times Square and the more touristy areas. If you can head a bit higher uptown, watch how room rates will fall accordingly? Also, stay in other boroughs (Queens or Brooklyn) and the hotel package will be even more reasonable. (more...)

These were done at one time only be very wealthy people that could afford the additional accommodation and expense that is associated with using a rental or time share while on vacation.
